LO CARNAVAL
The most famous Occitan carnival is that of Villar of Acceglio, in which the Barboreas procession parades on the last Sunday of carnival and the first in lent. Lo Carnaval, who is the king of the festival is escorted by two Harlequins in a richly decorated white costume, with coloured ribbons and cockades, as well as flowers, ears of corn and other fertility symbols. The two harlequins defend him from his greatest enemy that is Lent, guiding him by the hand and dancing in a proprietary manner. On the second day of the festival when Lent has already begun, the Carnival is placed on trial accused of having corrupted the young people, threatened the women and upset the calm: he is sentenced to death and shot, destined to be resurrected a year later.
