LHI ESCARTONS
In 1244 following a rising which occurred in Briançon against the excessive hold of the lord of the castle, the capital of the Dauphinate stipulated an agreement which envisaged independence for all the neighbouring communities: the upper Val Susa, Val Chisone, Brainzonese, Queyras and the upper Varaita valley. It envisaged the autonomous control of the territory with the right to coining money and to administrate justice. The name chosen for the federation deriving from the verb: escartonar, which indicated the way of dividing the taxes amongst the various components of the association. This agreement lasted until 1713, when the Treaty of Utrecht divided the territory between France and Piedmont, while the Susa, Chisone and Varaita valleys passed under the hands of the Savoy family.
