Pyrènées Orientales - Saint Martin de Fenollar

A PRE-ROMANESQUE CHAPEL
This pre-Romanesque chapel is located in the village of Maureillas, in which the simplicity of the architectural style contrasts with the elaborate nature of its decorations. At one time these frescoes entirely covered the entire building: today those of the apse remain representing the mystery of Incarnation, Annunciation, Nativity and the travels of the Three kings. The vault is depicted with a Christ in Majesty surrounded by the Evangelists. The Byzantine style making it possibly the work of the Master of Pedret. The great expressiveness of the faces and the rich, warm colours having inspired artists such as Braque and Picasso.
