Ariége - Vals

THE FIRST RURAL CHURCH
The first rural church of Vals of pre-Romanesque origin, was built on the site of the ancient oppidum, a second building being added in the 11th century, with a wonderfully frescoed apse. Here also it is possible to admire the typically Byzantine style of the “master of Saint-Lizier”, who was active in the Pyrenean zone of Catalonia. The life of Christ being portrayed by rigid and majestic personages in a series of images, his life being divided into three parts: birth, public life and Ascension to Divine Glory.
