Haute Garonne - Saint Lizier

THE MASTER OF SAINT-LIZIER
The Cathedral is located in the lower part of the town, and features a gothic bell-tower as well as a Romanesque chancel decorated with splendid frescoes of clearly Byzantine influence, both in terms of the facial expressions of the characters and the complete absence of any background. The work is presumed to be that of an anonymous painter known as “the master of Saint-Lizier”, who is also supposed to be the author of various other paintings found in Catalonian churches. Most of these paintings have, for their own protection, been transferred to the Catalan National Art Museum of Barcelona.
