Tarn - Lavaur

THE LARGEST MASSACRE OF THE CRUSADES
The largest massacre of the crusades took place in 1211 in Lavaur in which 400 men and women died in the flames. The crusaders also hung eighty soldiers who had defended the town, including Aimery de Montreal, brother of the lady of the town Donna Giralda, who met a terrible death.
« Estiers dama Girauda qu’an en un potz gitat :
de peiras la cubriron ; don fo dols e pecatz,
que ja nulhs hom del segle, so sapchatz de vertatz
no partira de leis entro agues manjat »
(As for Dame Giralda, she was thrown into a welland covered with stones; and it was a truly terrible shamebecause whoever asked for her help, was always given it)
GUILLAUME DE TUDÈLE, Song of the crusade
